What is the relationship between encoding information, storing it and retrieving it? How are they interrelated?

All information that is readable in human form is encoded and stored to storage media in a computer systems. The type of encoding varies. When the data is retrieved from the computers storage media, it is decoded back to a readable form. Pretty basic.
