Can shifter on car be replaced?

I Own a 1999 mitsubishi eclipse gts and im a biggener on manual and i was woundering if you could remove the shifter boot and put on a plate (like the ones you see on car games at arcades) becuse its really hard for my to tell if its in gear if its in the right one and stuff so ya thanks. o and what are you supposed to do when your stopped and worred that your gunna drift backwards and hit the person behind you(i was to pull the E-brake a littl and it will keep it from drifting) but ya. abd if you have anymore tips it would be wounderfull!
