How to appreciate fancy alcohol?

For someone who doesn't like alcoholic beverages at all...are there any tips to learning to appreciate expensive/fancy alcohol (i.e. wines, scotch, etc)? Just like it enough to not look terribly unsophisticated in social situations lol.
